Urban meets off-road.

Multipurpose vehicle concept for

Vehicle Design Graduation Project / Unsponsored

Idea

The core idea emerged from the juxtaposition of the two most prevalent vehicle types on our roads today: the compact city car and the SUV. Understanding the challenges each of these vehicle types encounter, both in our urban landscapes and driving culture, served as the primary motivation for this project.

Mission

The mission was to take the two vehicle genres and challenge the core concepts of mobility they represent: urban and off-road driving, and to close the gap between them. In both package and ability, the goal was to combine the best of both worlds into a compact, yet capable vehicle. One which is to better suit the modern road and user.

Inspired by Jeep’s off-road designs; a distinct silhouette with bold shapes. Aiming for a youthful appearance and purposeful details while departing from traditional off-roaders.

Balancing functionality with aesthetics and striving for a design that is both captivating and purposeful. The challenge was to merge the distinct aspects of 'city' and 'off-road' into a cohesive theme.

The main theme combines sculpted elegance for urban appeal with utilitarian elements for off-road capability. Strong opposing lines connect with bold, square architecture to create a striking yet recognizable surface graphic. The flowing, soft forms and contrasting detail highlight the vehicle's dual nature.

Building upon the mission, this project aimed to seamlessly integrate everyday city life and the yearning for outdoor experiences, into a solution that integrates the practicality of urban commuting with the freedom of adventure.

The small package allows for greater flexibility in real-life use cases, while still housing functionality where it matters.

The concept developed into an adaptive drivetrain which allows the vehicle to turn into an adventure-capable vehicle on the fly.

With wheels and suspension operated separately via hub motors, ideal driving styles are made possible for varying surroundings. Whether having to lean into tight fast corners or needing upright stability on offset angles. The short wheelbase and low ground clearance enables agility and ease of use in dense urban areas.

For off-road driving, the wheelbase extends and the ground clearance lifts, enhancing mobility. Counteracting the surface below allows for stable driving over obstacles. It ensures versatility and driver confidence, regardless of the environment, without impacting the vehicle’s size or functionality.

A strategically positioned storage compartment is at the rear, increasing the practical value of the design. Equipped with rails for easy access.

To further enhance functionality, an integrated bicycle rack offers users greater freedom and versatility, whether for last mile commute or outdoor adventures.

Featuring retractable cameras as mirrors for greater 360-degree visibility and protection when not used or traversing trough obstacles.

The vast 3D window also caters to enhanced visuals of the surrounding terrain. The window rails offer protection from front facing obstacles such as branches.
